Comparison of an elastic fitted baby cot sheet and an envelope-style cover for a thin baby mattress in Hong Kong

Baby Cot Sheets for Thin Mattresses in Hong Kong: Elastic or Envelope-Style Cover?

Baby cot sheets for thin mattresses: elastic fitted sheet or envelope-style cover?

A traditional elastic fitted sheet works well for many mattresses, but a very thin, soft or flexible baby mattress may bend, fold or lift when strong elastic pulls around its edges. An envelope-style cover may be a practical alternative in selected cases—but it must still match the mattress accurately and follow the sleep product manufacturer’s instructions.

30-second answer

Which design should you choose?

01 Choose a traditional elastic fitted sheet when the mattress is firm enough to resist the elastic and can be lifted easily for installation.
02 Consider an envelope-style cover when the mattress is extremely thin or flexible and elastic pressure may cause it to curl, collapse or fold.
03 An envelope cover is similar to a pillowcase: the mattress slides inside, while the opening or overlapping flap is positioned underneath.
04 Neither design is automatically suitable for every cot, crib, travel cot or infant sleep product. Check the manufacturer’s instructions first.

Two different constructions

Elastic fitted sheet vs envelope-style mattress cover

Both designs cover the mattress surface, but they stay in place differently. The right choice depends on the mattress thickness, firmness, flexibility and how it is installed inside the cot or bed.

Traditional construction

Elastic fitted sheet

Fabric wraps over the top and sides of the mattress. Elastic around the lower edge contracts underneath the mattress to hold the sheet in position.

Generally works well when:
  • the mattress has enough thickness and structure;
  • the mattress does not bend easily;
  • there is enough access to lift the mattress;
  • the fitted depth is made to the actual mattress depth.
Pillowcase-like construction

Envelope-style cover

The mattress is inserted into a rectangular fabric cover. The opening, overlap or flap is placed underneath rather than relying on elastic tension around the edge.

May be considered when:
  • the mattress is very thin and flexible;
  • elastic could cause the mattress to curl or fold;
  • the whole mattress can be removed for insertion;
  • the cover can be sized closely enough to reduce movement.

Why can elastic be a problem for a very thin mattress?

Elastic does not only hold fabric in place—it also applies inward tension around the mattress perimeter. A conventional cot mattress is often firm enough to resist this tension. A thin foam pad or flexible nursery mattress may not be.

01

The mattress may curl

A soft edge may pull inward when the elastic is shorter than the mattress perimeter.

02

The mattress may fold

A very thin pad may collapse while the fitted sheet is being stretched over the corners.

03

The corners may lift

Uneven elastic tension can pull a lightweight mattress away from a flat position.

04

Installation may be difficult

The customer may need to hold the flexible mattress flat while stretching the elastic over each corner.

Important distinction

A thin mattress is not automatically unsuitable for an elastic fitted sheet. The issue depends on its firmness, edge structure, actual depth and the strength of the elastic. Likewise, an envelope-style cover is not automatically more secure; an oversized cover may still move or wrinkle.

Side-by-side comparison

Which option better matches your mattress?

Decision factor Elastic fitted sheet Envelope-style cover
Mattress thickness Usually better suited to mattresses with enough depth for fabric and elastic to wrap underneath. May suit very thin mattresses when the full mattress can slide into a closely sized cover.
Mattress firmness Best when the mattress resists inward elastic tension. Can avoid perimeter elastic tension on a flexible mattress.
Installation The mattress corners are lifted while the fitted edge is pulled underneath. The mattress is normally removed and inserted into the cover, like a large pillowcase.
How it stays in place Elastic contracts around the underside. Close dimensions, the mattress inside the cover and an underside opening or overlap.
Risk when incorrectly sized Too small may distort the mattress; too large may release or wrinkle. Too large may move or bunch; too small may be difficult to insert or may compress the mattress.
Best starting question Can the mattress remain flat while elastic is fitted around it? Can the mattress be removed and inserted into a close-fitting cover?
Measure before choosing

What dimensions are required?

Both constructions require accurate measurements. Measure the actual mattress without compressing it, and use centimetres.

Measurement 01

Length

Measure the longest end-to-end dimension of the mattress.

Measurement 02

Width

Measure from side to side at the widest consistent point.

Measurement 03

Depth

Measure vertically from the top surface to the bottom without pressing the mattress down.

Helpful order details

Example: 113 cm length × 60 cm width × 1 cm depth

Also state whether the mattress is firm or flexible, whether it folds, whether it can be removed easily, and whether the requested construction is elastic fitted or envelope-style.

How does an envelope-style mattress cover work?

The design is similar to a pillowcase. The mattress is inserted through an opening at one end or along the underside. Depending on the agreed construction, the opening may have an overlapping fabric flap.

  1. Remove the mattress from the cot, bed or nursery unit.
  2. Insert the mattress into the fabric cover carefully.
  3. Adjust the corners so the fabric lies evenly over the sleeping surface.
  4. Position the opening or overlapping flap underneath.
  5. Return the covered mattress to the product only when the manufacturer permits a separate cover or sheet.

An envelope-style cover should not be treated as a universal solution. Because it does not rely on a strong elastic perimeter, close sizing becomes especially important. The mattress construction and the location of the opening should also be reviewed before production.

When should you stay with a traditional fitted sheet?

The mattress is firm and keeps its shape while the sheet is installed.
Its depth gives the fitted edge enough area to wrap underneath.
The mattress can be lifted without difficulty.
The cot or bed manufacturer permits a correctly sized fitted sheet.

When might an envelope-style cover be worth discussing?

The mattress is only around one or a few centimetres thick.
It bends, folds or curls when elastic is applied.
The mattress is removable and can be inserted into a cover.
The customer understands that a non-elastic cover still requires close sizing and proper positioning.
Baby sleep safety

Check the sleep product instructions before changing the cover design

Hong Kong’s Family Health Service advises using a firm, well-fitted mattress, leaving no gap between the mattress and cot, and keeping the sleep environment clear apart from a fitted sheet. The mattress should remain flat and properly fitted within the cot.

Do not add an extra mattress, soft topper or padding merely to make a sheet fit. For a travel cot, play yard, bassinet or product with a manufacturer-specific sleep surface, use only permitted mattresses, sheets and accessories.

Custom-order process

How to request the right baby mattress cover

Measure accurately

Provide the actual length, width and depth of the mattress in centimetres.

Describe the mattress

State whether it is firm, flexible, foldable, removable or unusually thin.

Choose the construction

Select a traditional fitted sheet or ask whether an envelope-style cover is practical.

Confirm fabric and colour

Choose the preferred custom bedding material, colour code and quantity.

For an unusual mattress, send a clear photograph together with the measurements. The photograph helps explain flexibility, corners, folding lines and the original cover, but measurements are still required.

Need a custom-size solution?

Tell us how thin and flexible the mattress is

Prepare the actual mattress dimensions and describe how the mattress behaves when lifted or fitted with elastic. This helps determine whether a traditional fitted sheet or a closely sized envelope-style cover is the more practical starting point.

FAQ

Thin baby mattress cover questions

Can an elastic fitted sheet bend a thin baby mattress?

It can happen when the mattress is extremely thin, lightweight or flexible and the elastic applies more inward tension than the mattress can resist. It is not a problem for every thin mattress, so firmness and construction should also be considered.

What is an envelope-style baby mattress cover?

It is a rectangular, pillowcase-like cover. The mattress slides inside, and the opening or overlapping flap is normally positioned underneath. It does not rely on a strong elastic perimeter.

Is an envelope-style cover better than an elastic fitted sheet?

Not universally. It may be more practical for selected very thin or flexible mattresses, while a correctly sized elastic fitted sheet is usually more convenient for a firm conventional mattress.

Can an envelope cover move without elastic?

Yes, particularly when it is oversized or the opening is not positioned correctly. Accurate dimensions and an appropriate construction remain important.

What measurements do I need?

Provide the actual mattress length, width and depth in centimetres. Also mention whether the mattress is firm, flexible, foldable or removable.

Should I measure the old cover?

No. Measure the mattress itself. An old cover may have stretched, shrunk or been incorrectly sized.

Can I order only the baby mattress cover?

Yes. A custom baby or children’s mattress cover can be ordered without purchasing a duvet cover, pillowcase or full adult bedding set.

Which fabric can I choose?

Simple ol’ Me’s traditional made-to-measure bedding currently includes 100s TENCEL™ Lyocell and 100s long-staple cotton sateen options. The available construction should be confirmed for the specific mattress and order.

Can I use this design in a travel cot or play yard?

Only when the product manufacturer permits the mattress, sheet or cover. Travel cots and play yards can have product-specific safety requirements, so do not add unapproved padding or substitute sleep surfaces.
