How to Measure a Baby Cot Mattress for a Custom Fitted Sheet
Baby cots, cribs, toddler beds, IKEA small beds and imported mattresses do not always share the same dimensions. For a properly specified custom baby cot sheet in Hong Kong, measure the actual mattress rather than the cot frame, model name, old fitted sheet or nominal size.
30-Second Answer
What measurements are needed for a custom baby cot fitted sheet?
Remove the existing sheet and measure the uncovered mattress in centimetres. Record the dimensions in this order: length × width × depth.

Why Made-to-Measure?
Why standard baby cot sheets may not fit properly
Terms such as “baby cot”, “crib”, “toddler bed” and “small mattress” describe a product category rather than one universal measurement. Even when two mattresses appear to have the same nominal size, their actual length, width, depth and corner construction may differ.
The sheet is too loose
Excess material may wrinkle, bunch or move because the sheet is larger than the mattress.
The fitted section is too shallow
The corners may not reach underneath the mattress or may release during normal handling.
The cot frame was measured
A fitted sheet covers the mattress, so the outside cot or bed-frame dimensions should not be used.
The protector changed the depth
A protector that remains beneath the fitted sheet can increase the finished depth that must be covered.
Do not rely on these measurements alone
Three Core Dimensions
Measure length, width and finished mattress depth
Use a firm measuring tape, place the mattress flat and allow flexible foam to rest in its natural shape. Record every measurement in centimetres.
Length
Measure from one end of the mattress to the other along its longest edge.
Keep the tape straight and level rather than following a curved edge.
Width
Measure from side to side across the widest point of the mattress.
Check more than one position when the mattress is flexible or slightly irregular.
Depth
Measure vertically from the top sleeping surface to the bottom of the mattress.
Do not compress the foam or measure only the part visible above the cot base.
Example Measurement Entry
120 cm length × 60 cm width × 10 cm depth
After recording the measurements, select the required fitted-sheet quantity, material and colour code. Add a note when the mattress has rounded corners, folding panels or another unusual feature.
Should the mattress protector be included?
Include it when it stays on the mattress
Install the thin, flat protector before taking the final depth measurement when it will normally remain underneath the fitted sheet.
Do not add an estimated allowance
Measure the actual finished combination. Adding several centimetres “just in case” can make the fitted sheet looser than intended.
Complete Process
How to measure a baby cot mattress step by step
Remove the existing sheet
Expose the mattress itself. Do not measure through a loose fitted sheet or padded cover.
Place the mattress flat
Allow foam and flexible edges to return to their natural shape before measuring.
Measure the longest edge
Record the mattress length from outside edge to outside edge.
Measure the widest point
Record the width and check another position when the sides are flexible.
Measure the full depth
Measure vertically from the upper sleeping surface to the lowest mattress edge.
Add the protector when relevant
Recheck the finished depth with the protector installed when it remains underneath the sheet.
Inspect the corners
Note whether the mattress has square, rounded, tapered or unusually soft corners.
Record the figures clearly
Submit the measurements as length × width × depth, all in centimetres.
Common baby cot mattress measuring mistakes
| Mistake | Why it causes problems | Better method |
|---|---|---|
| Measuring the cot frame | The frame is normally larger than the mattress. | Remove the mattress and measure it directly. |
| Using an old fitted sheet | The sheet may have changed size or never fitted correctly. | Measure the uncovered mattress. |
| Ignoring mattress depth | The fitted edge may be too shallow or unnecessarily loose. | Measure the full vertical depth. |
| Compressing the foam | The recorded measurement becomes smaller than the resting mattress. | Let the mattress rest naturally. |
| Adding a large allowance | The finished sheet may become looser than intended. | Submit the actual measurements. |
| Omitting unusual features | Rounded corners, folds or sections may affect construction. | Add notes and a clear reference photograph. |
Special Mattress Types
Extra information for non-standard baby and children’s mattresses
| Mattress type | What to measure | Additional information |
|---|---|---|
| Baby cot or crib mattress | Length, width and depth | Mention rounded or unusually soft corners. |
| IKEA or imported mattress | Actual centimetre measurements | Do not rely only on the product or model name. |
| Thin foam mattress or nap mat | Length, width and uncompressed depth | State whether the mattress folds, rolls or bends easily. |
| Convertible cot or toddler bed | Current mattress dimensions | Measure the mattress in its present configuration. |
| Travel cot or play yard | Only the approved sleep surface | Follow the manufacturer’s instructions and do not add an unapproved mattress or accessory. |
Very Thin Mattresses
Mattress depth may affect the cover construction
A conventional elastic fitted sheet may suit many cot mattresses. A very thin, soft or flexible foam pad may bend when strong elastic pulls around its perimeter, so an envelope-style cover or another construction may need to be considered.
Choose the Fabric Feel
100s TENCEL™ Lyocell or 100s cotton sateen?
Accurate sizing is required for either material. Choose the fabric according to the preferred feel, drape and appearance.
100s TENCEL™ Lyocell
A smooth, light and fluid option for families who prefer a softly draped fabric surface.
- Smooth and light hand feel
- Softer, more fluid drape
- Available for made-to-measure fitted sheets

How should the finished fitted sheet sit?
The fitted sheet should cover the mattress securely without large areas of loose, folded or bunched material. It should not require excessive force to install or distort the mattress.
Baby Sleep Safety
Keep the mattress firm, well fitted and free from gaps
Hong Kong’s Family Health Service advises caregivers to use a firm, well-fitted mattress, leave no gap between the mattress and cot, and keep soft objects and loose bedding out of the baby’s sleep space. Apart from a fitted sheet, the sleep environment should remain clear.
Always follow the instructions supplied with the cot, crib, travel cot, play yard or other sleep product. Custom-sheet measurements and product information do not replace infant-safety guidance or medical advice.

Frequently Asked Questions
Custom baby cot sheet measurement FAQ
Can I order custom baby cot sheets in Hong Kong?
Yes. Simple ol’ Me offers made-to-measure fitted sheets for baby cots, cribs, toddler beds, children’s beds and other non-standard small mattresses.
What measurements do I need?
Measure the actual mattress length, width and full depth in centimetres. Also mention rounded corners, folding sections or other unusual features.
Should I measure the cot or the mattress?
Measure the mattress itself. The outside dimensions of the cot or crib frame are normally larger and should not be used as the fitted-sheet dimensions.
Can I measure an old fitted sheet instead?
Measuring the mattress is more reliable. An old fitted sheet may have stretched, shrunk after washing or been incorrectly sized.
Do I need the cot brand or model?
The brand and model can provide useful context, but they do not replace actual mattress measurements.
What if the mattress has rounded corners?
Measure the maximum length and width, mention the rounded corners in the order notes and provide a clear photograph where possible.
Can you make sheets for IKEA or imported cot mattresses?
Yes, provided the actual mattress length, width and depth are supplied. Do not rely only on the product name or nominal size.
Should a mattress protector be included in the depth?
Include a thin, flat protector in the finished depth when it will normally remain beneath the fitted sheet. Measure the mattress and protector together rather than estimating an allowance.
Can I order only one baby fitted sheet?
Yes. A custom fitted sheet can be ordered individually without adding an adult bedding set, duvet cover or pillowcase.
Is a fabric fitted sheet waterproof?
No, unless the selected product specifically states that it is waterproof. A fabric fitted sheet and a waterproof mattress protector perform different functions.
How long does custom baby bedding take?
Many custom orders require approximately two to three weeks after the measurements, material, colour and order details are confirmed. Actual timing can vary with fabric availability and production scheduling.
