Custom Duvet Covers in Hong Kong: How to Measure the Duvet Insert Correctly

Custom duvet covers in Hong Kong: measure the duvet insert, not the old cover
A made-to-measure duvet cover should be based on the duvet insert that goes inside it. An old cover may have shrunk, stretched, been oversized from the start, or been designed for a different insert. Measure the actual duvet from edge to edge before ordering.
How should you measure for a custom duvet cover?
Start from the English Custom-Made Bedding Hong Kong hub →
The most common measuring mistakeWhy should you not copy the dimensions of an old duvet cover?
The cover is only the outer shell. The item that must fit correctly is the duvet insert inside it. Measuring the old cover can repeat an existing fit problem.
The old cover may have shrunk
Repeated washing and drying can change the dimensions of the fabric over time.
It may have been oversized
A loose cover can allow the duvet insert to move, gather or leave empty fabric at the corners.
It may fit a different insert
The duvet may have been replaced while the same old cover remained in use.
Brand labels are not universal
Single, Double, Queen, King and imported size names do not always represent the same centimetre dimensions.
How to measure the duvet insert correctly
Remove the duvet from its existing cover, allow it to settle naturally, and measure the insert itself. Avoid pulling the corners outward or flattening a thick insert aggressively.
Width
Measure horizontally from the left outer edge to the right outer edge at the widest natural point.
Length
Measure vertically from the top edge to the bottom edge along the longest natural point.
Duvet cover: 180 cm width × 220 cm length · Quantity 1 · Selected material and colour code
Submit the dimensions of the duvet insert you measured. Do not automatically increase the width or length because you expect a cover to need “extra space”.
What happens when a duvet cover is too large?
A duvet cover that is significantly larger than the insert can leave unused fabric around the edges. The insert may move away from the corners, gather toward one side or require frequent repositioning.
What happens when a duvet cover is too small?
A cover that is smaller than the insert can compress the duvet or force it to fold and bunch inside. A thick, lofty insert may appear uneven when its natural dimensions are constrained.
Do not deliberately size the cover smaller to make the duvet “look fuller”
A custom order should be based on the actual insert dimensions. If you prefer a particular visual effect, mention it as a preference rather than changing the measurements of the duvet itself.
When does a custom duvet cover become especially useful?
| Situation | Why a ready-made cover may not fit | What to provide |
|---|---|---|
| Imported duvet insert | The centimetre dimensions may differ from common Hong Kong ready-made cover sizes. | Actual width and length. |
| Hotel-style or oversized duvet | The insert may be deliberately wider or longer than ordinary retail dimensions. | Actual width and length, plus any relevant construction note. |
| Extra-thick or high-loft duvet | A very full insert can behave differently from a thin summer insert even when the flat dimensions are similar. | Width, length and a note that the duvet is unusually thick or lofty. |
| Custom or legacy duvet | The original matching cover may no longer be available. | Measure the insert currently in use rather than searching by the old product name. |
| Children’s or specialty duvet | Small or unusual dimensions may not align with standard adult bedding ranges. | Actual insert dimensions and quantity. |
What if the duvet is very thick, fluffy or uneven?
Lay it flat and allow the filling to settle naturally before measuring. Do not squeeze it to reduce the dimensions and do not pull the outer shell taut to make it larger.
For an unusually lofty, boxed, sectioned or specialty insert, add a note to the order. A photograph can help explain the construction, but the measured width and length are still required.
Choose the fabric feel100s TENCEL™ Lyocell or 100s cotton sateen for a custom duvet cover?
100s 100% TENCEL™ Lyocell
A smooth, soft option with a lighter and more fluid drape. It suits customers who prefer a softer, flowing bedding surface and gentle sheen.
- Custom duvet covers available
- Made from the measured duvet-insert dimensions
- Individual colour-code selection
- Pricing based on estimated fabric usage
100s long-staple cotton sateen
A smooth natural-cotton option with subtle lustre and a more structured, tailored appearance than the more fluid TENCEL™ drape.
- Custom duvet covers available
- Made from the measured duvet-insert dimensions
- Individual CMC colour-code selection
- Pricing based on estimated fabric usage
Can the duvet cover be a different colour from the fitted sheet?
Yes. Traditional custom bedding allows items to be entered separately, so the fitted sheet, duvet cover and pillowcases can use different colour codes when you want a coordinated or contrasting bedroom palette.
The material family still matters: TENCEL™ uses the CMT colour range, while cotton sateen uses the CMC colour range. Similar colour names may appear different because the fibres and surface structure reflect light differently.

Can I order a custom duvet cover in Hong Kong?
Yes. Simple ol’ Me’s traditional custom-bedding products include made-to-measure duvet covers in 100s TENCEL™ Lyocell and 100s long-staple cotton sateen.
Should I measure the duvet or the old duvet cover?
Measure the duvet insert itself. The old cover may have shrunk, stretched, been oversized or originally belonged to a different insert.
What measurements are required for a custom duvet cover?
Provide the actual duvet-insert width and length in centimetres. If the insert is unusually thick, lofty, shaped or sectioned, add a note.
Should I add extra centimetres to the duvet measurements?
No arbitrary extra allowance should be added to the measurements you submit. Enter the actual insert dimensions.
What if my duvet is an imported size?
That is a common reason to use custom sizing. Ignore the size name and measure the actual duvet width and length in centimetres.
Can I order only a duvet cover?
Yes. A duvet cover can be entered as an individual custom item without ordering a fitted sheet or complete bedding set.
Which materials are available?
Traditional custom duvet covers are available in 100s 100% TENCEL™ Lyocell and 100s long-staple cotton sateen, subject to current product availability.
Can my duvet cover and fitted sheet use different colours?
Yes. Traditional custom items can be entered with individual colour codes, allowing coordinated or contrasting combinations.
How is a custom duvet cover priced?
The traditional custom-bedding quotation uses the selected material, duvet dimensions, quantity, colour and estimated fabric usage as the pricing basis.
How long does production take?
Many custom orders require approximately two to three weeks after measurements, material, colours and order details are confirmed. Actual timing can vary with fabric availability and workshop scheduling.
Is the detachable zipper system available for duvet covers?
No. The detachable zipper system is a fitted-sheet construction. Custom duvet covers are ordered through the traditional TENCEL™ or cotton-sateen custom-bedding products.
