Custom Duvet Covers in Hong Kong: How to Measure the Duvet Insert Correctly

For a custom duvet cover, measure the duvet insert itself—not the mattress. The cover should be made from the insert’s actual length and width, because duvet sizes vary by brand, country and product line even when they use the same names such as Double, Queen or King.

The same principle applies to fitted sheets and pillowcases: measure the item that the cover will actually fit around.
How to measure a duvet insert
- Lay the duvet insert flat on a bed or clean floor.
- Gently spread it without stretching the filling.
- Measure the full length from top edge to bottom edge.
- Measure the full width from side edge to side edge.
- Record the measurements in centimetres and use those dimensions for the custom cover.
Why the bed size is not enough
A 150 cm mattress does not automatically tell you the duvet insert size. Some people prefer a larger insert for more side coverage, while imported bedding brands can use different duvet standards. A custom cover should therefore follow the insert, not a generic mattress-size chart.
Should the cover be larger than the insert?
For a made-to-measure order, the safest default is to submit the actual duvet-insert dimensions and let the product be made to that specification rather than adding an arbitrary allowance yourself. Oversizing the cover without a specific reason can allow the insert to move around inside.
What if the insert is an imported or unusual size?
That is exactly where made-to-measure bedding is useful. European, UK, US, Japanese, hotel, custom or older duvet inserts can all use dimensions different from common Hong Kong ready-made covers. The production reference remains the actual length and width.
Choose the duvet-cover material by hand feel
Once the dimensions are confirmed, compare all four traditional custom materials rather than limiting the choice to only two:

Can the fitted sheet, duvet cover and pillowcases be different sizes?
Yes. In a made-to-measure order, each item should follow the object it covers:
- Fitted sheet: mattress length × width × height.
- Duvet cover: duvet insert length × width.
- Pillowcase: pillow length × width, with notes for unusual shapes if necessary.
This is particularly useful when a household uses a local mattress but an imported duvet insert, or when the duvet is intentionally larger than the bed.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Using the mattress size as the duvet-cover size.
- Assuming all “Queen” or “King” duvet inserts have the same dimensions.
- Measuring an old cover instead of the insert.
- Adding a large allowance without a specific reason.
- Choosing material only by yarn-count number rather than fibre composition and actual hand feel.
