Custom Fitted Sheets for Thick Mattresses & Toppers in Hong Kong: How to Measure

Custom fitted sheets for thick mattresses & toppers in Hong Kong: how to measure

If a fitted sheet keeps popping off the corners, the problem may not be the elastic. A thick mattress, topper or permanent protector can increase the total depth beyond the pocket of a ready-made sheet. For a made-to-measure fitted sheet, measure the actual sleep stack that the sheet must cover.

30-second answer

What depth should you enter for a custom fitted sheet?

01Measure the actual mattress length and width, not the bed frame or nominal bed-size label.
02Measure the total depth that the fitted sheet must cover, at the highest point and without compressing the mattress.
03If a topper or protector normally stays on the mattress inside the fitted sheet, include it in the total depth.
04If the mattress is heavy, embedded in a platform frame or difficult to lift, compare a traditional fitted sheet with a detachable zipper design.

Why corners keep lifting

Four reasons a fitted sheet may keep popping off a thick mattress

“Deep pocket” is useful only when the pocket depth actually matches the mattress setup. Length, width, total depth and access around the mattress all matter.

01

The pocket is too shallow

The sheet reaches the mattress side but cannot travel far enough underneath to remain securely positioned.

02

A topper changed the depth

A mattress that once fitted a standard sheet can become much deeper after a topper is added.

03

Length or width is also wrong

Choosing a deeper sheet cannot correct a footprint that is too short, too narrow or too large for the mattress.

04

The mattress is difficult to lift

A heavy or recessed mattress may make it difficult to pull the fitted edge evenly underneath all four sides.

Measure the sleep stack

Mattress only, mattress + protector, or mattress + topper?

The correct custom depth is the height of everything that will normally sit inside the fitted sheet.

Mattress only

Use the mattress depth alone when no topper or permanent protector needs to be enclosed by the fitted sheet.

Mattress + protector

Include a protector when it normally remains installed underneath the fitted sheet and affects the total depth.

Mattress + topper

Include the topper when the fitted sheet will wrap around both topper and mattress as one combined sleep stack.

Three measurements

How to measure a thick mattress for a custom fitted sheet

Use centimetres and measure the actual setup in the condition in which it will normally be used. Do not push down on a soft topper while measuring.

Measurement 01

Width

Measure from one outer mattress edge to the other at the widest point.

Measurement 02

Length

Measure end to end along the longest outer edges of the mattress.

Measurement 03

Total depth

Measure from the top of the sleep stack to the bottom of the mattress at the highest point without compression.

Example

Mattress: 28 cm + topper: 7 cm = total fitted-sheet depth: 35 cm

This example assumes the fitted sheet will wrap around both the topper and mattress. Measure the actual configuration rather than relying on the arithmetic alone.

Should you add extra centimetres “just in case”?

For made-to-measure bedding, enter the actual mattress dimensions rather than deliberately increasing the mattress depth. The fitted construction already needs sufficient fabric to travel around and underneath the mattress.

Measure the object, not the sheet you wish existed

Do not change a measured 32 cm mattress depth to 35 cm simply because 35 cm sounds like a common deep-pocket size. Submit the actual 32 cm.

Traditional or detachable?

Which custom fitted-sheet construction suits a thick mattress?

Traditional custom fitted sheet

One complete fitted sheet

Choose a traditional made-to-measure fitted sheet when the mattress corners can be lifted and there is enough space around the bed to remove and refit the entire sheet.

  • Available in 100s TENCEL™ Lyocell

  • Useful for platform beds and wall-side frames
  • Current material: 100s 100% TENCEL™ Lyocell
  • Fixed package and size-tier ordering

What mattress sizes fit the current detachable zipper system?

The current Simple ol’ Me detachable 100s TENCEL™ zipper fitted-sheet product uses two size tiers. Check the live product page before ordering because specifications may change.

Size tier Mattress width Mattress length Mattress thickness
Single 60–107 cm 170–220 cm 5–35 cm
Double+ 108–180 cm 170–220 cm 5–40 cm

Measurements outside these ranges require a separate quotation. For a traditional fitted sheet, use the quotation tool on the TENCEL™ or cotton-sateen product page with the actual dimensions.

Hong Kong bedroom realities

Why mattress access matters as much as mattress depth

A 30 cm mattress in an open bed frame can be easier to change than a thinner mattress recessed inside a platform bed. Look at how much working space you have around the mattress.

01

Platform bed

The mattress may sit inside a frame, leaving little room to tuck fabric underneath.

02

Hydraulic storage bed

The mattress can be heavy and repeated corner lifting may be inconvenient.

03

Wall-side bed

One or two mattress sides may be difficult to reach even when the mattress itself is not unusually deep.

04

Heavy premium mattress

The issue may be physical access and weight rather than dimensions alone.

FAQ

Thick mattress and topper fitted-sheet questions

How do I measure a thick mattress for a fitted sheet?

Measure the actual mattress width, length and total depth in centimetres. Measure depth at the highest point without compressing the mattress or topper.

Should I include my mattress topper in the depth?

Yes when the fitted sheet will normally wrap around both the topper and mattress. Measure the combined setup as it is actually used.

Should I include the mattress protector?

Include it when it normally remains underneath the fitted sheet and affects the total depth.

Why does my fitted sheet keep popping off?

Common causes include a pocket that is too shallow, incorrect mattress length or width, additional topper depth, or difficulty tucking the fitted edge evenly underneath.

Is a deep-pocket fitted sheet the same as a custom fitted sheet?

No. “Deep pocket” normally describes a larger ready-made pocket depth. A custom fitted sheet is made from the actual mattress width, length and depth you provide.

Should I add extra centimetres to the mattress depth?

No arbitrary allowance is needed in the measurement you submit. Enter the actual total depth.

Can I order only a custom fitted sheet?

Yes. The traditional 100s TENCEL™ and 100s cotton-sateen products allow fitted sheets to be ordered without requiring a duvet cover or complete set.

When is the detachable zipper fitted sheet useful?

It is designed for mattresses that are thick, heavy or difficult to access, including platform beds and wall-side frames. The fitted base remains installed while the sleeping panel can be removed for routine washing.

Is the detachable zipper fitted sheet available in cotton sateen?

The current detachable product is 100s TENCEL™ Lyocell. Traditional custom bedding is available in both TENCEL™ Lyocell and long-staple cotton sateen.

How is a traditional custom fitted sheet priced?

The quotation tool uses the selected material, dimensions, quantity, colour and estimated fabric usage to calculate the pricing basis.

How long does custom bedding take?

Many Simple ol’ Me custom orders require approximately two to three weeks after the measurements, material, colour and order details are confirmed. Actual timing may vary.
